Dystonia Awareness Week

What is Dystonia?

Dystonia is a term used to describe uncontrollable and often painful muscle spasms which have been caused by incorrect signals from the brain. There are a large number of different types of dystonia which affect people in widely differing ways. Dystonia is considered a neurological movement disorder, where faulty signals from the brain cause muscles to spasm and pull on the body incorrectly. This forces the body into twisting, repetitive movements or abnormal postures. (The Dystonia Society UK)

Unfortunately Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) can often cause muscular disorders that include sudden and severe spasms, tremors and involuntary severe jerking and dystonia. Unfortunately like CRPS there is no cure. Treatments are available and most people do manage to develop successful strategies for living with dystonia combining treatment with pain control and sensory tricks to help with social situations. (The Dystonia Society UK).

In a study by Van Rijn, M.A. (2010) Dystonia was the most prevalent movement disorder within the study group. It was later found by Munts, A.G. et al. (2011) that approximately 25% of CRPS cases go on to develop fixed dystonia.
