To date, there has been little research conducted exploring how pain is communicated about between healthcare professionals, parents as well as children and young people who have chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions. The purpose of this programme of research, The CHAMP study (www.champ-study.co.uk), is to investigate the lasting influence and impact that pain communication can have over time on children and young people. Participants will include children/young people who have different chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions (e.g. chronic regional pain syndrome, juvenile idiopathic arthritis etc) who are aged 5-19 years old and their parents. The research will comprise of two phases. We are currently only recruiting for Phase 1 of this study.

Phase 1 will be a semi-structured interview study in which children, young people and parents will draw timelines of their/their child’s clinical care and reflect upon their experiences and perspectives of pain communication with different healthcare professionals across their timelines. This study will allow us to identify the key milestones in which pain communication has had its biggest impact and how on children and young people, as well as parents. We are aiming to recruit approximately 25 children and young people and their parents across the UK for this study.

There are lots of options around how children/young people and parents can participate in this study. Interviews can be conducted online or via the telephone. Children/young people and parents may choose to do their interviews together or one after the other. We have a range of different pre-existing timelines with key milestones on that the research team have developed with patients if participants would prefer to have something more structured to start their timeline with, or participants can create their timeline completely from scratch. Participants can also create their timelines prior to the interview or during the interview.

We hope that you will be interested in participating in this study! Please contact the research team at The University of Manchester if you have any questions or would like to discuss the study in more detail:

Compensation will be provided as a thank you for children/young people’s time taking part in the study.
